The Council of Shia Ulema of Afghanistan has called for urgent humanitarian assistance to those affected by the recent earthquake in the country’s northern provinces, and emphasized the need for the immediate reconstruction of the Holy Shrine in Balkh Province.

Hawzah News Agency- In a statement issued following the 6.3-magnitude quake that struck the Kholm region of Balkh on Sunday night, the council expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life and extensive damage to homes and religious sites.

The statement urged government bodies, relief agencies, and charitable organizations to dispatch emergency aid and rescue teams to the affected areas without delay, stressing the need to provide shelter, food, warm clothing, and essential supplies to the victims.

Highlighting the onset of winter and freezing temperatures, the council underscored the urgent need for tents, heating materials, and winter clothing to prevent further suffering among the displaced families.

The Council of Shia Ulema also called for the restoration of religious and historical monuments, particularly the Holy Shrine in Balkh, noting that preserving such spiritual and cultural landmarks must be a key part of reconstruction efforts.

The 6.3-magnitude earthquake left at least 20 people dead and more than 600 others injured, according to Afghan officials. Relief and rescue operations are ongoing in the quake-hit regions as authorities continue to assess the full extent of the damage.
